These Common Brushing Mistakes Can Cause Gum Disease & Recession

Brushing your teeth twice each day can boost your oral health and the appearance of your smile, but only if you do it the right way. If you’re too harsh on your teeth, don’t change your brush, or ignore your gums, you may have to see your dentist for gum disease treatment. These common mistakes can lead to gum disease and recession.

Brushing Too Aggressively

Dentists suggest that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush for your regular dental hygiene routine. If your bristles are too stiff, they can damage your teeth instead of clean them. This can also happen if you brush your teeth with too much force. You don’t have to brush hard to remove bacteria and plaque. Simply hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and move in small circles along each tooth. Don’t rapidly move your brush back and forth across your teeth, as this can end up being counterproductive.

Forgetting to Replace Your Toothbrush

Regardless of what type of toothbrush you choose, make sure you replace it frequently enough. It’s recommended that you get a new toothbrush after three or four months of use, but there are signs that indicate you should switch it out sooner. If your bristles start to bend or look dirty or discolored, it’s time for a replacement. Frayed bristles typically mean you’re overdue, since they won’t do much to help you.

Ignoring the Gum Line

When plaque builds up on your teeth, it’ll eventually end up under your gum line. You can’t see your whole tooth, but you still need to get to the invisible areas. That means you need to get to the couple of millimeters of tooth that lies under the gums. Stick to the 45-degree angle and don’t forget your gum line.
