Deciding Between Dental Implants and Dentures

If you have missing teeth, your dentist will help you review your options for restoring your smile, including dental implants and dentures. Both of these treatments replace missing teeth, but they do so in different ways and have different benefits and drawbacks. Which dental restoration is right for you? Your dentist will help you make a decision that is customized to meet your needs. Here are some of the facts to consider while making your choice.

Dental Implants

Dental implants consist of a crown and a post that is anchored into the jaw like the root of a tooth. Implants stay in place, so you brush and floss them like normal teeth, and you don’t have to worry that they will slip while you’re talking or eating. Further, because dental implants behave like natural teeth, you don’t have to make any special dietary changes. Patients who choose dental implants appreciate their natural appearance and the fact that they don’t need any special care.

The process of getting dental implants takes longer than the process of getting dentures. Your dentist will first implant the post into your jaw, and then allow it to fuse with the bone so that it is secure—this takes place over the course of several months. After that process is complete, the gum tissue is opened to expose the post, and the crown is attached via an abutment.

Dentures are a set of porcelain structures designed to mimic the appearance of natural teeth. They are attached to a gum-like base that sits on top of your gums. Today’s dentures are much more comfortable and natural-looking than dentures of the past, making them an ideal solution if you’re missing an entire row of teeth.

Unlike dental implants, dentures do require special care. They must be removed to be cleaned, and you may need to make some adjustments to your diet to accommodate them. Your dentist will explain how to care for your dentures based on the type you get.
