What to Expect When Getting Tooth-Colored Fillings or Porcelain Crowns

Crowns and fillings are two common reasons for a visit to the dentist. If you take the time to learn about the procedures you’ll be having done before your visit, you’ll find the experience to be much more pleasant.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

One of the best options for taking care of a cavity is using a tooth-colored filling. This filling is made from a durable plastic known as composite resin. Unlike other options, tooth-colored fillings blend in and are virtually unnoticeable when compared to other teeth. When having a cavity filled, you’ll begin by being given a small injection of local anesthetic. Next, the dentist will carefully clean the tooth surface and use a small dental drill to remove any decaying tooth from the cavity and prepare the area to be filled. The composite resin will then be placed into the tooth and allowed to harden. Besides the slight pinch of the injection, your filling should be painless.

Porcelain Crowns

A crown is a cap that is used to replace a damaged tooth. It restores shape, size, and appearance. Crowns are placed over a tooth covering the entire top portion, and they are used to protect a weak tooth or to restore a tooth that is damaged. Installing a crown generally requires two visits to the dentist—the first to examine the tooth and create a crown, and the second to place the permanent crown. Because it takes a few days to create a proper porcelain crown, you will receive a temporary piece to protect your tooth until the crown is ready.  Upon your next visit, the permanent porcelain crown will be place and cemented in.

If you find yourself in need of a crown or filling, relax. The process is generally painless and quite simple. For more information or to set up an appointment, contact Dr. Michael J. Wei at (212) 982-4080.

New York City Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Michael J. Wei Providing Mercury-Free Tooth-Colored Fillings

New York City Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Michael J. Wei is replacing toxic silver-amalgam tooth fillings with safe, non-toxic mercury-free tooth fillings that provide natural-looking tooth restorations for Manhattan and New York City-area patients.

The FDA has recently revised their position on the safety of the mercury silver dental fillings due to the pressure from consumer groups and dental organizations. Now the FDA is recognizing the dangers of mercury from “silver amalgam” tooth fillings. Fortunately, modern porcelain and composite tooth-fillings offer a more natural-looking alternative that are safe, non-toxic and permanent solution for repairing teeth that have cavities, decay or damage.

Common Dental Problems and Accompanying Solutions

There is an array of common dental problems that you don’t have to live with. These issues plague many, but can be relieved with the proper care and treatment.

Tooth Sensitivity

Millions suffer from tooth sensitivity that can make eating hot or cold foods hard to handle. In extreme cases, even outside temperature can cause discomfort! Living with sensitivity isn’t necessary. Many dentists recommend toothpaste which desensitizes the teeth.  If that at-home fix doesn’t work, in-office options include strengthening fluoride treatments or sealing treatments, which help with sensitivity as the result of receding gums.

Abscessed Teeth

An abscess is an infection of the tooth caused by trauma or tooth decay. Abscesses often cause swelling, pus, pain, and discomfort. Because this issue can become life-threatening, you should immediately seek dental care. Root canals are commonly used to treat this issue and save the tooth. Antibiotics are also often used to fight the infection.

Gum Disease

Gum disease causes inflammation of the soft tissue and loss of bone. Your dentist can approach this problem in a few different ways. Scaling and root planing, an extremely thorough cleaning of the tooth, is one non-surgical option. For more advanced gum disease, periodontal surgery may be required. Surgery is used to remove and replace damaged bone and gum.

TMJ

Often undiagnosed, TMJ is a common issue that can cause a variety of discomforts. This issue of the temporomandibular joint causes painful headaches as well as popping and clicking in the jaw, and can create muscle issues in the upper neck and back. There are many ways to treat this, including oral appliances to set the jaw in proper place, physical therapies, and some medications and injections. Lifestyle changes can also improve TMJ symptoms.
