Flossing: It's Important!

Flossing is one of the most important, and most often neglected, tactics in preventing tooth decay and gum disease.

In this video, you’ll get advice on how to properly floss—information covered includes how to apply floss, how to wind it, and how to avoid cuts and irritation. You’ll also get details on how plaque and bacteria-rich biofilm can affect the health of your mouth and why flossing is such an effective cleaning strategy.

If you’d like more tips on how to properly floss or general advice on everyday oral hygiene, then feel free to give us a call at the offices of Dr. Michael J. Wei. You can also use our website as a resource, and learn more about what general and preventative dental procedures entail.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease (or gingivitis) is caused by the excessive buildup of plaque and bacteria in the mouth and can result in periodontal disease and tooth loss. If you have gum disease, then you may experience significant redness, swelling, and bleeding in your gums, making it uncomfortable to speak or chew and impossible to pursue cosmetic remedies (lumineers and veneers, for example) to correct whatever tooth loss you experience.

Most importantly, however, gum disease and tooth decay can also cause chemical and hormonal imbalances in the body that may result in heart disease, artery blockage, and stroke. To avoid these and the above complications, take the following preventative measures:

  • Brush/Floss Regularly—Brushing two times a day and flossing once daily will rid your teeth of lodged particles of food and plaque. Flossing is critical, as it can reach areas of your mouth that your tooth brush cannot.
  • Rinse Your Mouth—Use a mouth rinse or wash to flush out your mouth and help arm your teeth against bacteria.
  • Eat Right—Stay away from excessive sweets as they can increase cavities and tooth decay, and keep yourself hydrated—water catalyzes saliva production, which can help prevent bacteria from settling.
  • Avoid Tobacco—Experts generally agree that in addition to cancer, tobacco products like cigarettes and chewing tobacco increase your risk for gum disease.
  • Visit Your Dentist—Try to make it in to see your dentist for a teeth cleaning and checkup every six months. Professional eyes will spot problems and signs of trouble that you may not.

If you have more questions about how to prevent gingivitis or think you may be experiencing symptoms of gum disease, then ask our experts at the New York offices of Michael J. Wei. Our dental team is experienced not only in general dentistry, but also with the cosmetic and restorative procedures and products. 5 Reasons to Practice Proper Oral Hygiene

Though you may think you take care of your teeth, it’s critical to remember that proper oral hygiene is more than simply brushing your teeth each day—oral hygiene can help you avoid significant, long-term health problems and associated complications.

Want to know more? Read through the following reasons to practice proper oral hygiene and find out exactly how clean and healthy teeth and gums can benefit you.

1. Disease Prevention—Poor dental hygiene can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. Studies have also linked diseased gums to heart disease, diabetes, pre-term birth, and other serious health problems. In properly maintaining your teeth and gums, you can help prevent these more serious and potentially fatal complications.

2. Pain Prevention—Gingivitis and tooth decay can cause significant discomfort via cavities and swollen/bleeding gums. A healthy, well-maintained mouth, on the other hand, is not only more comfortable, but also more resilient.

3. Reduced Health Care Costs—Treating the complications caused by dental problems can be very pricey, as can the cost of cosmetic or restorative procedures and products (braces, veneers, and the like) and increases in dental insurance. Avoid these expenses by making a comparatively lower investment in tooth paste, floss, and mouth wash.

 4. Aesthetics—Proper dental hygiene can prevent unsightly discoloration, bad breath, and eventual tooth loss. Keep your smile looking great with proper maintenance, and in doing so, increase your sense of self-worth!

 5. Setting an Example—Act as a role model for your children and/or siblings, and show them the value of keeping your teeth and gums healthy by practicing good oral hygiene yourself.
