How is Plaque Detected?

You’ve probably heard about the dangers of plaque build-up from your dentist or from toothpaste commercials. But just what is it and what can you do about it?

According to the dentist in this video, plaque is a sign of the onset of gum disease. Plaque is the food and bacteria that gathers around your gum line. A disclosing discovers where the plaque is so you can brush and floss it away before it leads to bleeding gums and, ultimately, gum disease.

For more information about plaque and to learn more about caring for your teeth, call Dr. Michael J. Wei at (212) 982-4080. Our office can perform a variety of procedures to show off your smile, including cosmetic tooth bonding and porcelain veneers.

Reasons Why Invisalign Might Be the Right Choice for You

Are you trying to decide between traditional metal braces and Invisalign? Are you wondering whether cerinate lumineers or porcelain veneers would be the better choice than Invisalign braces? The answer to these questions has a lot to do with your lifestyle. If the following statements apply to you, Invisalign braces might be the right choice for your smile makeover.

You love food.

Traditional braces limit what you can eat. Because food can easily get stuck in metal braces, there’s high risk of cavity formation. Plus, very crunchy or chewy food can actually bend wires or pop off brackets. That’s why dentists advise braces-wearers to avoid foods like caramel, popcorn, jerky, whole apples, and carrots.

You need to be taken seriously at the office.

Like it or not, you’re often judged by your appearance. Because traditional braces are so associated with adolescence, it may be hard to retain your colleagues’ respect while wearing traditional braces. Invisalign braces, on the other hand, are nearly undetectable, making them a great choice for a high-powered professional.

Your life is busy.

Traditional braces take a lot of special care. Not only do you need to take a lot of time to carefully brush your teeth, but flossing can become a time-intensive ordeal.

Oral hygiene is high on your list of priorities.

A great advantage to Invisalign braces is that you can take them out. That means you can brush and floss normally. Plus, if you’re highly concerned about getting food stuck in your teeth, you have less hardware to worry about––and you can simply remove your braces at mealtimes.

You want a permanent solution.

If you’re trying to decide between Invisalign braces and cerinate lumineers, porcelain veneers, and cosmetic tooth bonding, remember that braces are the only way to physically change the alignment and placement of your teeth (in technical terms, malocclusion of the teeth). This may have an impact on your overall mouth and jaw health.

Everyday Habits that Keep Your Smile From Being its Brightest

Many everyday habits can affect the whiteness of your teeth. You may opt for porcelain veneers or cosmetic tooth bonding to improve your smile, but even after these smile makeovers, your teeth could remain sensitive to stains and discoloration if you’re not careful. Pay attention to the following habits––they make a big difference to your smile:

Drinking coffee and tea:

Dark-colored liquids like tea and coffee will stain your teeth. If you can’t live without your daily dose of caffeine, you might want to consider cerinate lumineers, which resist staining.

Drinking wine:

You probably know that red wine stains your teeth, but did you know that white wine can affect your teeth too? The problem is the acid—it weakens your enamel and leaves it vulnerable to other foods and drinks.

Using tobacco products:

Chewing tobacco, cigarettes, and cigars will yellow your teeth. Using tobacco also puts you at risk for oral cancer, which puts your life in danger––something even more important than your smile.

Poor dental hygiene:

It sounds simple, but brushing frequently––especially after meals and acidic foods––will do wonders for your teeth. Brushing can keep surface stains from forming and prevent unsightly cavities. Just don’t brush too hard, because that could actually harm your enamel.

Consuming too much fluoride:

It sounds silly––isn’t fluoride good for your teeth? It is to an extent, but too much fluoride will end up staining your teeth.
