Questions to Ask Your New Dentist on a First Visit

Regular visits to the dentist are the first step toward good oral hygiene. To best maintain your oral health, find a skilled dentist that offers you reassurance and comprehensive treatment. Here are a few questions to ask your new dentist to ensure you have a good fit:

  • Are you experienced?

Ask how long the dentist has been practicing and where they got their certifications. A long-time dentist may have a lot of experience, but a newer dentist will have a better grasp of the latest dental health advancements. Have your dentist explain their experience and how they keep up-to-date.

  • What anesthetics do you use?

Many dentists’ offices offer sedation to calm patients’ fears during visits. If sedation is something you’re interested in, then talk to your dentist about it. Otherwise, discuss the dentist’s usual procedure for anesthesia to make sure you’re comfortable.

  • What are my options for emergency care?

In the event that your dentist’s office is unavailable, have the dentist make a recommendation for emergency dental services. Find out what your options are so that you can be prepared in an emergency.

  • How can I improve my dental health?

Ask your dentist for advice on proper brushing, flossing, and rinsing, and other dental procedures that would benefit your dental health. Request other recommendations for healthy maintenance and if there are specific signs that signify improved oral hygiene.

Symptoms of a Cavity

At the very least, cavities are painful and inhibiting nuisances. If left untreated, however, cavities can lead to significant infection and the need for surgical treatment.

To avoid extensive tooth decay, it is first necessary to familiarize yourself with the symptoms listed below. If you experience any of these, it is critical that you seek professional treatment as soon as possible.

  • Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is one of the initial signs of a cavity. You will most often experience sensitivity and discomfort when biting down, or when your tooth encounters temperature variations, especially cold.

  • Visible Pits

As cavities worsen, they can cause visible holes and pits in the tooth which are often sensitive to the touch.

  • Visible Discoloration

A cavity may also cause brown discoloration at the most sensitive sites.

  • Prolonged Pain

Prolonged tooth pain or toothaches can be a sign of a more serious cavity, or of decay reaching the nerves at the root of your tooth.

  • Pus

Pus around the tooth at the gum line is a sign of serious infection, which can be caused by severe tooth decay. Should your cavity reach this stage of progression, you may need a course of antibiotics and surgical treatment (most likely a root canal).

You may not be conscious of cavity formation, as initial decay can be symptomless. For this reason, keep regular dental appointments—a professional can examine your smile and, if any cavities are detected, treat the issue before you feel any discomfort or pain.
