Flossing is one of the most important, and most often neglected, tactics in preventing tooth decay and gum disease.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease (or gingivitis) is caused by the excessive buildup of plaque and bacteria in the mouth and can result in periodontal disease and tooth loss. If you have gum disease, then you may experience significant redness, swelling, and bleeding in your gums, making it uncomfortable to speak or chew and impossible to pursue cosmetic remedies (lumineers and veneers, for example) to correct whatever tooth loss you experience.

Most importantly, however, gum disease and tooth decay can also cause chemical and hormonal imbalances in the body that may result in heart disease, artery blockage, and stroke. To avoid these and the above complications, take the following preventative measures:

  • Brush/Floss Regularly—Brushing two times a day and flossing once daily will rid your teeth of lodged particles of food and plaque. Flossing is critical, as it can reach areas of your mouth that your tooth brush cannot.
  • Rinse Your Mouth—Use a mouth rinse or wash to flush out your mouth and help arm your teeth against bacteria.
  • Eat Right—Stay away from excessive sweets as they can increase cavities and tooth decay, and keep yourself hydrated—water catalyzes saliva production, which can help prevent bacteria from settling.
  • Avoid Tobacco—Experts generally agree that in addition to cancer, tobacco products like cigarettes and chewing tobacco increase your risk for gum disease.
  • Visit Your Dentist—Try to make it in to see your dentist for a teeth cleaning and checkup every six months. Professional eyes will spot problems and signs of trouble that you may not.
