Steps Involved in Receiving Your Porcelain Veneers
Receiving your porcelain veneers is a simple process; your cosmetic dentist
will explain the steps in more detail and answer any questions you have
about this option prior to treatment.
1. You and your dentist will discuss your smile and the aspects you want
to change. During this process, you’ll have complete input in your
treatment; together you will decide how many veneers you want, as well
as their color, shape, and size so they’ll match your natural teeth
and make the changes to your smile that you want to see.
2. Your dentist will make models of your teeth and mouth to create your
veneers; this may include taking a dental impression, digital photos,
or X-rays to ensure the right shape and fit. If your teeth will need preparation
before receiving your veneers, this is completed before the model of your
mouth is created. Tooth preparation removes a thin layer of enamel from
the teeth to accommodate the thickness of your porcelain veneers; you
will receive a local anesthetic for comfort during this process.
3. Your dentist will provide temporary veneers to cover your teeth while
your permanent veneers are fabricated in a laboratory. This process typically
takes one to two weeks.
4. You’ll return to your dentist for final veneer placement, during
which your temporary veneers are removed and the custom porcelain veneers
bonded to your teeth.
Porcelain Veneer Considerations
There are many cosmetic problems with the teeth that veneers can solve,
including shape, size, and even some types of misalignments.
Porcelain veneers only cover the front portion of a tooth; thus, they are suited to correcting
imperfections in the front teeth. If you want to correct your molars,
porcelain tooth crowns may be more appropriate. Additionally, despite
the cosmetic issues you wish to correct, you should have healthy teeth
and gums prior to veneer placement. You and your dentist can treat underlying
dental health issues before you receive your porcelain veneers. Veneers
are durable and long-lasting, but will eventually need replacement—most
porcelain veneers will last 10-20 years before replacement is required.
